Ry Cooder, who wrote the music for films such as Paris, Texas, often enthused to Wim Wenders about his trip to Cuba and the record he had made there with some old Cuban musicians. Then the record, “Buena Vista Social Club”, appeared, and was a worldwide success. When Ry Cooder went to Cuba again in early 1998 to record a solo album with Ibrahim Ferre and all the musicians who had played on “Buena Vista Social Club” (now known as the Super Abuelos – the “Super-Granddads” – Cuba), Wenders accompanied him, observing the musicians in the studio and following their lives in Havana. The filming continued in the spring in Amsterdam, where they gave two concerts, and ended in New York with their triumphal success in Carnegie Hall.
