Sam, een Amerikaans schrijver die in Rome woont en werkt, is getuige van de moordpoging op de vrouw van een galerie-eigenaar. Hij zit echter vast tussen twee deuren en kan niets doen. De vrouw overleeft de aanslag en de politie beweert dat zij de enige overlevende is van een beruchte seriemoordenaar die de stad al jaren onveilig maakt. Sam besluit de zaak nader te onderzoeken in de hoop er een spannend boek over te kunnen schrijven.

Dario Argento was born in Rome on September 7, 1940. He began his career as a movie critic for the Rome daily newspaper Paese Sera. He joined Bernardo Bertolucci to write the screenplay for Sergio Leone’s Once Upon A Time In The West, which revealed his talent. He made his directing debut when he was 30 with The Bird With The Crystal Plumage. Even though the shooting was not easy, the film is considered to be the first giallo of the cinema industry. Codes were established and enabled to customise the thriller in an Italian style. Dario was one of the first directors to see the possibilities of the steady cam and the luma crane.
With his style, Dario Argento, who was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe, exercised his influence on filmmakers from all around the world, including Belgian directors Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani.
